Food Services

We recognize that nutrition impacts classroom performance, so we have designed our menus and food preparation to provide excellent nutrition and teach health and wellness. We prepare our lunch menus to provide both appeal and proper nutrition. The variety of our menus ensures that our students get all of the necessary nutrients and other substances associated with good health, clear thinking, and a balanced diet. We teach the importance of nutritious meals while encouraging good eating habits. We also encourage parents to help their children eat healthy, nutritious foods both at school and at home.

Sponsors are required conduct SFSP outreach before the end of the academic school year to ensure that eligible families are informed of the availability and location of SFSP meals. This is required even if the sponsor is not participating in the SFSP.

Schools may fulfill this requirement through postings on the school's website, Robo calls, flyers, or other methods that notify the community of locations of summer meal sites.

SASD Wellness Policy Assessment

During the 2018–2019 school year, the Smethport Area School District Safety, Security, and Wellness Committee completed an assessment of the SASD's Wellness Policy #246. An assessment of the district's wellness policy is required every three years. Please view the completed assessment tool and report template for more information. After completion of the assessment, the board approved the revision/renewal of SASD Policy #246 School Wellness, on May 13, 2019. Please see policy #246.

Nutritional Excellence

All of our school campuses participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The NSLP is a federally assisted meal program that provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free meals to qualifying students. The food and beverages we sell or serve on our campuses meet state and federal requirements, which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We encourage our families to apply for meal benefits by completing a Free and Reduced Meal Application.

Breakfast
We are pleased to provide breakfast at all campuses starting at 7:40 a.m. We believe that a good breakfast is a great start to each child’s day and helps keep young minds focused on learning and not empty tummies!

Please remember, we do not serve breakfast when we're on the two-hour delay schedules.
